Ashworth College students and grads have unlimited access to our online Career Services. Career Tools. Returning students. As a returning …. Online school is just really hard. Everyone is trying their best. Despite the frequent waterworks, I am not blaming the schools or the teachers at all — they are doing an impossible job that they did not sign up for.
Teachers had to learn a whole new set of online systems and deal with unpredictability of teaching online see 8 My hat is off to everyone going above and beyond to support their students.
A kindergarten student was sitting on the floor at home and the teacher asked if the PTA could help get them a desk. We are fortunate that when we put out the call for desk donations, several families offered to donate one. One family even offered to purchase a new desk for that child. You can help make sure every child has a desk by supporting the organization Desks by Dads , which builds very basic desks.
We are headed for a real mental health crisis. Some kids are actually doing well but so many are suffering. For many, school is not only their place of learning, they also receive meals, emotional support, speech therapy, and much more. And for some kids, being at home in multiple Zoom classes per day is not fun. They are sad, angry, frustrated, and hopeless.
Nine months feels like forever. The isolation is especially acute for children without siblings. The rates of child abuse and neglect, suicide and suicidal ideation, and domestic violence have exponentially increased, and the typical intervention strategies are greatly limited while children are not in school buildings. School counseling is woefully underfunded already in schools, with a typical caseload of about instead of as recommended by the American School Counselor Association.
When we return to school, students will need extensive support to deal with PTSD, learning loss, re-learning school routines, and more. This will take resources. Do you know where your child is? First-quarter report cards came online November 24, and I suspect there were some surprises. Did you know your child missed or skipped some days of school? Some schools did not hold parent-teacher conferences, so the opportunities to connect at school have been limited. Navigating multiple programs and platforms.
MCPS students are learning to navigate dozens of programs and platforms. And to top it off, the way I understand it, kids have to check modules, announcements, and voluminous emails even for elementary students! I guess I should be grateful for all the online resources, but I wonder how our kids are learning to use them and how the teachers keep track of it all.
Sometimes the on-screen navigation — doing long division, for example — leads them to lose their place and make a mistake. Make a text box, type the equation, make a text box, divide first number, multiply, make another text box, subtract, make another text box, bring down the next number, text box, repeat.
Screen time limits are pointless, or at least hard to enforce. But if your kid does school in their bedroom, and you have, say, a job that requires you to leave your kids to their own devices literally for at least part of the day, it is hard to monitor what goes on in their room.
You die, you die, you die!!! The word that is out is: Bedtime. Do any kids still have a bedtime and is it possible to enforce this? But I give myself a C- on this one. Quiet space is a premium, and a luxury. Avoiding background noise can be challenging at home. At my house, a 3-story townhouse, all 5 of us have a dedicated corner of the house where we do our work. Some parents share a desk or table with a child because they need to assist their child with logging into class.
Having your child as a coworker is hard. At the beginning of the school year, some families hired a private teacher or formed a learning pod. Educational inequity is not new, but virtual learning has made things much worse.
In order to keep sensitive information secure, it is required that you completely log off of all applications and close all windows before leaving the computer. Through online media or web portal employees can know details about their pay stubs and w2 statements like regular salary for active hours or worked hours, compensations, wages, pay time, tax related information etc.
Thank you for coming to www. The way we are teaching reading as a result is incredible. The basis is to get kids to hear the sounds first before they read them i. It helps kids first get the basics, before there are even letters. This will be done class-wide for kindergarten and used more sparingly with small groups in 1st and 2nd grade, based on what students need.
We are looking for opportunities to get the training for the last kindergarten teacher too. We have some folks concerned about the SchoolStore fundraiser for the school. It is a passive fundraiser that has been going on for about 10 years. Dr Gadsden needs to know if this is a huge problem or a small problem. She will look for input from us about next month. Olsen 2nd grade teacher had her baby a week early. Unfortunately her class has had 3 subs in 2.
The long term sub that was hired is leaving next week because she got a full-time job. To avoid having the kids have yet another substitute in the short time frame, until Ms. Olsen returns on December 10, her class will be split among the other teachers in 2nd grade.
If you have a concern or question, please feel free to email Dr. PBES also does passive fundraising. It is under the radar, has been going on for a long time. Some students participate a lot, some do not. We are missing a 0. Is helping them think about how all programs fit into place at PBES and how to go forward. The program has 6 essential elements; we fit our activities into these and assessed strengths and weaknesses.
We did a Panther Pride rally on the 2nd day of school and plan to do this quarterly. It is like a town hall meeting for the school where we talked about core values for the school, reviewed expectations for students and, in future quarters, will talk about goal setting.
The leadership team and staff thought it was a great event. It is rare that students can all get together in one place because of space restrictions. We are continuing our emphasis on Restorative Practice and Restorative Circles, and added in the Second Step program done as weekly lessons in the classroom by classroom teacher with support from paraeducators and reinforced by specialists and counselors for continuity during the day and year.
Every Second Step program for each grade has 25 lessons and there is some common language across grades so are some parallels going through the building.
Lessons usually run minutes per week. Are seeing great payoff from these materials. We have 1. Newer Stories. Oberdorf Mark your calendars for our next meeting, Tuesday, April 13, pm. The national justification for SROs is to protect students from external threats. But there is no evidence that this is a deterrent for a school shooting.
Questions were raised about how some of the services provided by SROs to the schools would be replaced without adding more burden to existing teachers and staff.
The county bill would provide some funding for additional mental health services. Castelo will share poems, games, and stories of Mexico. Spanish interpretation is available. Big thanks to Kelly Young for all of her work on the Dolphin Drive and to Chris Campbell for behind-the-scenes work to get website up and running with all the right information.
Now there is a pool of social-emotional learning SEL resources available by the county instead of relying on each counselor to provide curriculum. SEL time is woven into grade level curriculum and classroom practices now Uses CASEL curriculum - focused on self-management, self-awareness, social awareness, relationship skills and responsible decision-making.
Resources and lessons for students are differentiated by grade level. October was personal body safety and cyber civility lessons at PBES. TPES did personal body safety in November. Typically Mr. Coco gets to visit PBES classes once a month virtually during homeroom time.
PBES now has an Equity Hub program in the building, run by Kids Adventures, to provide students who need support outside the home during virtual learning. They are accepting more students. Email is a great way to reach the counselors for each school. They will move with grades, so next year Mr Althofer will have the 1st and 2nd graders.
If not during school time, providing projects for kids that match their interests can help pull them away from screens e. Can meet the rest with a Readathon or book fair or other activity later in the year.
Still managing the budget for the school food cluster support. Looking at potential adjustments to the budget and will keep membership abreast of any changes needed some changes could require a vote. TPES is moving last special of the day to that later morning time- not at but moved to It was hard to get kids to come back to that special in the late afternoon.
TPES teachers will give them choices as to what to do in the afternoon; kids will be able to choose the activity. Not supposed to be done at , should be working PBES: Concern: they have 2 blocks of specials in the afternoon to move them both in the morning; there is only one slot in the morning, and not enough teachers to cover both sessions in the morning.
